A little Learjet time

Postby sgabriel » 05 Jul 2009 15:40

I took the Learjet up today for some approaches. Here's a little clip of a take-off and landing at CYYC. Enjoy!

(All comments in praise of my mad skillz are welcome!)

excellent work Scott. the Lear is a handful, and looks like you managed it like a pro. :-D
Here’s to the crazy ones. The rebels. The troublemakers. The ones who see things differently.
While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

Yes I really enjoyed your video.

Here's a nice screen shot you might like, this is what it looks like from the right hand seat of a real Learjet 24D. I took this late last year.

Learjet 24D.jpg

I've been flying the Learjet 25C in X-plane as it's about the same plane as the real 24D I fly and I have to tell you that Jason has done a fantastic job!

Now if I could just have a couple of stripes and some tail numbers added to the one I really fly it'd be perfect! ;)
I'd rather do reviews of the Jason's Lear than spend time learning how to use a paint program.

More Learjet comparisons and info to come!

I like the LearJet 25 as well. Though I don't have a license, it's still nice to know that someone who flies them finds this one the same as the real thing. Please tell us more about your LearJet experience.

Oh one thing I'm really curious about is: how to get rid of excess airspeed - like when I need to slow down for a pattern? The LearJet is so streamlined that just cutting down on the throttles isn't really effective. What's the right procedure? Thanks!

Could you please explain more of the flight profile you're having problems with? Such as is this doing traffic patterns or on a straight in landing?

You really have to plan ahead, it's actually easier than a Cessna 340 I fly. We rarely use spoilers as they are noisy and roughen up the ride. Plus you can't use spoilers with flap extension. The landing gear helps a lot. I fly a 24D which is a little different but we'll do flaps 8 degrees at 200kt then gear down. The gear speed is 203kts (Vlo) and once it's down you can actually do 265kts (Vle) that's how we do emergency descents from FL450, slow to 203kt IAS, put the gear down then fall out of the sky!

Hope this helps but please don't hesitate to ask more.

I have little time in the next few months then summer hits but I plan on using the record feature and adding some audio, if I can figure it all out and do some instrument approaches and training like I do in real life and explain what I'm doing and looking at.

Jason has really done a fabulous job with the learjet.

The only thing I miss is a takeoff trim setting. ;)

You got me thinking a little. When I do my training/checkrides we go out with no passengers and little fuel. So we're about 3,000 lbs lighter than normal.

I'll get an engine failure at 500 feet AGL on takeoff and to keep under the 200kt speed limit in Class D airspace I have to quickly remove power from the good engine!

Now that's just fun, reducing power after an engine failure.

There is one big no no with the Lear, don't get slow and behind the power curve. You'll get a very high AoA and the plane will start to dutch roll. Very scary stuff.

Hiya,

Aha! That helps a lot. I was thinking of cruising at FL300, descend to FL100 and a speed limit of 250kts, then when field is in sight slow down even more down to either for a straight in or a pattern.

Why is the combo of flaps and spoiler not approved?

Long time ago I fiddled w/ plane design. I thought the take off trim setting can be entered in PlaneMaker.

>>>>Why is the combo of flaps and spoiler not approved?>>>>>

The manual says: Simultaneous extension of the flaps and spoilers in flight is prohibited because of possible damage to the flaps.

Perhaps this is an airflow flutter issue.

I had a Learjet flight in the 24D a few weeks back and I jotted down some numbers during the Climb to FL400.
I thought someone may find some interest in the numbers.
The real numbers compare very well to Jason's work.
